A Bold Move

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” - Mary Oliver

At one point or another, we’ve all had that inner dialogue: “What do I want to do with my life?”

Sometimes, the direction of life can seem outwardly planned for us by circumstances and external influences, and so dreams end up put on hold, shelved or diminished to fit that reactive state of coping with what life brings.

But the truth is, once you ‘know’ which way your life is meant to head - when you truly know it and feel the rightness of it and you've made the decision to go for it, there’s no turning back... no matter what.

Well... that depends on whether you're "ready" AND "not ready."

Ready... and Not Ready

Making a big change can be intimidating. I’ve done it, more than once. It was both terrifying and overwhelming, and exhilarating and empowering.

It’s definitely a step - well, okay, more of a head-first leap - into the unknown, wayyyyyyyy out of the comfort zone, and on some level you have to be both ready and not ready. Paradox? Not really - read on!

By ready, I mean you’ve made the decision that this is what you will do. Now. GO.

You also need to be "not ready."

By not ready, I mean you’re okay with the uncertainty. You know you're not 100% prepared, but you know you’ll figure it out because you’re resourceful, clever, creative, resilient and adaptable. You know that you will learn the skills, gather the knowledge, and building whatever you want to build is "on-the-job training."

It's the "not ready" part that stumps people.

What if I’m not good enough?

What if it all blows up in my face?

What if I make a bunch of stupid mistakes that cost me everything?

So the question is, when will this 'readiness' happen? If you're stuck in the "I need to be ready" mindset, the answer is... never. There will always be some uncertainty and things you just don't know and skills you don't have so you will never be truly ready. In that mindset, when you feel "not ready" you won't take action, and if you don't take action, nothing will happen.

It takes a BOLD mindset to be in a "ready state of un-readiness" - that is, being willing to say yes to this; and also being agile, ready to learn, ready to try approaches you have never thought of before and willing to make mistakes.

Here are some ways to cultivate that mindset:

1. Imagine that there are infinite possibilities before you… because it is true! The only possibilities closed to you are the ones you close yourself to.

2. Turn your fear into excitement. Choose to see these possibilities as adventures. Learning, exploration, curiosity, the personal challenge of “how I can rise to the occasion,” the excitement of adding new skillsets and knowledge... these help keep life juicy and interesting!

3. Stand on the shoulders of giants. Sir Isaac Newton famously said, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” You can, too! There’s no reason to reinvent the wheel or have a merry-go-round do-over of unnecessary mistakes. Find mentors, absorb what they’ve experienced, embody their wisdom and avoid their mistakes.

Make bold statements and turn them into reality in small steps using MindPT. Whatever you choose to imprint in your mind, will become your “operating system.”

So on that note, why limit yourself? Why not think BOLD? Why diminish your immense potential? Why belittle your incredible talents? Why hide your “you-ness”? If you use MindPT every day, you’ll want to buckle your seatbelt because you WILL shift your mindset to BOLD, just as your car shifts into high gear on the highway. And then? You will say, “Goals and ideal life, here I come!”
